Ideally, you will always have more material than you need, which requires selecting the best material and organizing it into an appropriate speech format. Format: For this exercise, you will be assigned to a group. You will work first as individuals to begin the process. Then, you will work together to produce the finished product – a speech of introduction outline. Scenario: In this case, imagine that you are writing a speech to introduce a classmate. You have talked with “Katie” and collected the information below. Information collected from your talk with Katie: NOTE: Do NOT alter any of the information below. Do not add additional items. Her name is Katie Anne Trindle She lives in Parkville with her parents. Her major is psychology. She entertains children in the cancer ward. Sometimes she and her friends sit in a diner and talk for hours and hours. She has a park near her house. She has been performing music at parties since she was 12. Kelly’s favorite color was purple. Being home schooled was lonely at times. Her goal is to become a counselor for families with terminally ill children. She likes the pizza at Minsky’s. Her birthday is May 30. At the time of Kelly’s death, she was twelve and Katie was 15. She likes islands, and has visited Puerto Rico, Bali, and the Florida Keys. She has a German Shepherd named Cookie and a guinea pig named Herbie. She plays the drums and electric guitar. Kelly died of cancer three years ago. She doesn’t have a boyfriend. She is in the process of forming an all girl band. Her favorite color is orange. When she was little, she wanted to be a lighthouse keeper. She does not have a job now. The park has a pond where ducks and geese like to swim. Her favorite actor is Brad Pitt. Her sister’s name was Kelly. Sometimes she plays songs for the children, and other times she just visits. She is very outgoing and likes hanging out with her friends. She has a tattoo on her upper arm of a purple heart with the name Kelly. Her favorite foods are pizza and her mom’s peach cobbler. She is a Gemini. Her dad wants her to be a lawyer. She likes to go to movies. She used to work at Shoe Carnival. She volunteers at the local children’s hospital. She plays alternative rock music. She is now an only child. She wouldn’t mind being a famous musician. She chose Park because it is close to home and it is a good school. Her favorite restaurant is Minsky’s. She likes to feed the ducks. She doesn’t like broccoli. She is taking 17 credit hours this semester. She can’t sing. She is very close to her mother. She was home-schooled. She once tried to dye her red hair black; it turned pea green. She isn’t into country music, but likes to wear cowboy hats and cowboy boots. Group Exercise 1 Procedure: Individually: identify at least eight of the items in the list that you can organize into two categories (at least four items in each category). Post your results in the discussion for your group below. If someone has posted their categories before you, try to come up with different categories or different items for your categories. This must be completed by Wednesday night. Working together: Select three categories that will work well as main points for the speech. Organize the categories into a speech outline similar to the one below, using the individual items about Katie as subpoints. Complete this portion of the exercise by Sunday night.
